Paper and pencil interview (PAPI) is a commonly used method of data collection. It represents a process of interviewing, where the interviewer has a printed-out questionnaire from where read the questions, ask the respondents and fill their answers back into the questionnaire.
PAPI requires well-trained interviewer who is able to lead properly the communication process and to control interview environment. It is a good-approach to gather in-depth information about attitudes, beliefs, and other more sophisticated topics of research. It is a suitable method for asking more complex as well as open-ended questions. Personal contact with participants might elicit richer and more detailed responses. Provides an excellent opportunity to probe and explore questions. However, it should be highlight that PAPI also provides the greatest chance for interview bias.
Respondents do not need to be able to read or write to respond.
